Chapter Nine
Jenna checked her watch. It was nearly 6:00 a.m. Soon, Sophie would wake up and demand her breakfast bottle.
She took a moment to gather her thoughts and to reassure herself one last time that everyone was okay. The security alarm hadn’t gone off. No one had fired shots into the place. That SUV hadn’t returned.
But all of those things might still happen.
Cal hadn’t come out and said that, but after he’d discovered the tracking device on her car, they both knew anything was possible. He’d considered moving them again, but had decided to stay put and hope their safety measures were enough to keep out anyone who might decide to come after them.
After Cal had disarmed and removed the tracking device, every possible function of the security system had been armed. Cal had even alerted all three members of the household staff, and the gardener, Pete Spears, had assured them that he’d keep watch from the gatehouse.
All those measures had been enough. They were still alive and unharmed. But the day had barely started.
With that uncomfortable thought, Jenna eased off the chaise and moved as quietly as she could so she wouldn’t wake Cal. He hadn’t slept much. She knew that because he’d been awake when she finally fell asleep around midnight. He was still awake when she’d gotten up at 2:00 a.m. to feed a fussing Sophie. He’d even gone with them to the kitchen when she fixed the bottle, and he’d taken his gun with him.
But he was thankfully asleep now.
He was sitting with his legs stretched out in front of him, so his upper back and neck were resting on the chaise. His face looked perfectly relaxed, but he had his hand resting over the butt of the gun in his shoulder holster.
She reached for her shoes, but Cal’s hand shot out. Before Jenna could even blink, he grabbed her wrist, turned and used the strength of his body to flatten her against the chaise.
Their eyes met.
He was on top of her with his face only several inches away from hers. In the depths of those steel-blue eyes, she saw him process the situation. There was no emotion in those eyes. Well, not at first. Then he cursed under his breath.
“Sorry. Old habits,” he mumbled.
It took her a moment to get past the shock of what’d just happened. “You mean combat training, not intimate situations?” She meant it as a joke, but it came out all wrong. Of course it did. His kisses could melt paint, and he was on top of her in what could be a good starting position for some great morning sex.
But there wouldn’t be any.
Cal got off her with difficulty. He dug his knee into the chaise to lever himself up, but that created some interesting contact in their midsections.
“Dreams,” he explained when he noticed that she was looking at the bulge behind the zipper of his jeans.
About me? she nearly asked but thankfully held her tongue. It was wishful thinking. Yes, he’d kissed her, but he hadn’t wanted to.
